CQA Quadrille Championships
Please read class structure carefully as it is
different from last year’s format

Class 1.  CQA Introductory Level Championship
 Compulsory Test 2 and Intro level Freestyle

Class 2.  CQA Novice Level Championship
 Compulsory Test 2 and Novice level Freestyle

Class 3.  CQA Preliminary Level Championship
 Compulsory Test 1 and Preliminary Freestyle

Class 4.  CQA Intermediate Level Championship
 Compulsory Test 1 and Intermediate level Freestyle

Two judges to score each ride. A qualifying score (60%) required in a freestyle ride, submit proof with entry. 1998 CQA Championships will be awarded at each level. Prizes and sashes to first, ribbons through 5th. Prize money awarded at each level: with $10 add back per team. Prize money divided: 1st 50%, 2nd 30%, 3rd 20%.  Championship Coolers to the highest scoring team (combined score) in the Championship Division. Entry fee: $150


Open Quadrille Classes

California Cup
World Cup-style Dressage Competition

Each competitor to ride one compulsory test and one musical freestyle, the highest average
percentage to win.  Tests to be ridden from memory, whips allowed. Ribbons to class winners;
sashes and prize money to division winners. Prize money awarded per division: with $10 add
back per rider. Prize money divided: 1st 50%, 2nd 30%, 3rd 20%. Championship Coolers to the highest scoring Senior and Junior California Cup competitors.  Entry fee: $110/division

Feature Classes
Held Saturday or Sunday time permitting
All tests Saturday & Sunday to be ridden from memory.

Costume Kur - $50 per entry
Emphasis on COSTUME! Open to quadrilles, pas de deux/trois, or individuals. Five minute musical freestyle, judged 60% on costume merit (originality and creativity), 40% on regular technical & artistic merit (using standard CQA or USDF scoresheet).  State test level on entry. Cash Prize to first and second, awards through 5th.

Prix Caprilli - $40 per rider
Test listed in prize list. Combined test of novice difficulty, incorporating a basic dressage test with several jumping efforts of approximately 2' 9". Judged on harmony and horsemanship.

Pas de Deux - $50 per pair
Five minute musical freestyle program, judged on technical execution, harmony as a pair, and choreography. State test level on entry. Prize money, divided 1st 50%, 2nd 30%, 3rd 20%.

Stick Horse Class - sign up at ringside
Open to stick horses of all breeds and sizes with riders of ages 15 and under. Movements from any level may be requested by special judge. Schooled stick horses available for borrowing. Special awards to all competitors. Post entries expected.

Junior Jam (Mini-caprilli) - $40 per rider
Similar test as prix caprilli but walk-trot and jumping efforts 18” or less, designed for the very novice young rider. See test in prize list..

Terrier Races - No Charge
Traditional style terrier races with start box and mechanical teaser lure. Great fun! Muzzles suggested for racing older dogs. Sign up with noontime event manager the day of the show to enter, but please call 408-728-5004 to pre-register!

General Information

Stabling Information
Portable stalls with doors, with 24 cubic feet of shavings included per stall, $90 for duration of
show. Grounds open to arriving competitors Wednesday, September 9, noon, close Monday
September 14, noon. Additional bedding may be ordered from Augie's Feed 728-1711 for
delivery to show grounds. No straw allowed. Augie's also has good alfalfa, red oat hay, and
grains available.

General Information & Rules
1. Unless specified otherwise, all classes will be run in accordance to AHSA rules and
specifications. In situations that are not covered by the AHSA rules, show management will have the final decision.

2. Membership. All  competitors and horse owners in dressage classes must be CDS members
or pay the CDS non-member fee. Application in prize list. $5 non-member fee may be applied
toward a 1997-1998 CDS membership with a voucher available from the secretary. The CDS $1 scholarship fee is mandatory for all riders in dressage classes. (Quadrille riders riding in any non-quadrille class are responsible for these fees; if only riding quadrille they are exempt.)

All quadrille riders must be members of the CQA for championship classes; non-members on
teams riding only in open quadrille classes must pay a non-member fee of $5 per non-member.

3. Entries. All entries must be made on official entry blanks and completely filled out with
appropriate signatures and information. Entries will not be accepted with missing information.
Full payment to accompany entries. $30 returned check fee. Any competitor leaving the grounds
with an outstanding balance due will be billed with an additional $30 office fee. Brief biographies of horses and riders are appreciated for program and announcement purposes.

4. Scratches made before the closing date of August 28 will have their fees returned less a $20
office fee. No refunds will be given after the closing date, although substitutions are possible.

5. Schedule: CQA Championship classes and California Cup classes to be divided over the
weekend, compulsory tests on one day, freestyle tests on the other. These classes have
scheduling priority if the show is oversubscribed. Other classes and demonstrations will be
scheduled as possible, competitors should be prepared to ride any day. If there is a maximum
number of classes you want to ride in one day, please indicate and which ones you wish to drop
if necessary.

6. Tests: 1995 AHSA and FEI tests and 1996 USDF tests to be used.

7. Riding times. Times will be mailed or faxed to all riders. It is the rider's responsibility to call secretary if times not received. A packet will be given to all competitors upon checking in at the grounds including updated schedule, program, 3 admission passes, and welcome goodies.

8. Music. Musical freestyles and quadrille rides: Music must be presented in cassette tape
format cued to the correct place. There will be sound checks scheduled each day. Competitors
are encouraged to have a representative at the announcer's stands to tell the announcer when to
start and stop the tape. New this year: Professional announcer and improved sound system!

9. Competition arena: Excellent sand/synthetic footing, arena size to be 20m x 60m for
dressage classes, 20m x 40m for quadrille and prix caprilli classes. Covered  warm up arena of
similar footing. Separate lunging/riding area available in pasture. Competitors warming up for a class have priority, if space should become limited.

10. Horse Management. Horse numbers must be worn at all times when under saddle. Be
aware of public safety issues as this is an event that draws a large, general public attendance.
Please be a good ambassador for your sport!

11. People Accommodations.  Overnight parking available: no RV hookups on grounds, NO
FIRES. Very nice KOA Kampgrounds with RV hookups and campsites is less than 5 minutes

The local area has many recreational activities including many golf courses, beaches, and tourist attractions, from the Santa Cruz Boardwalk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

12. Food. Excellent food available on grounds by No Reservations. Many restaurants in 10
minute vicinity. (Two exits south on Hwy 1 (152/Main Street) is good area.) Complimentary wine glass and wine tasting with each admission pass.

13. Hose/washing. One wash rack available near stabling area. No washing in barn aisles.
Follow posted guidelines.

14. Stall cleaning. Please deposit manure at designated sites at end of stable row. Bring
cleaning implements.

15. Dogs. Must be on lead AT ALL TIMES unless actually racing. Any loose dog will be
impounded with a $50 fine to the owner. If you don't wish to keep your dog on lead and quiet,
don't bring it! We’re serious!

16. Protests. Must be in writing with a $100 deposit and submitted to the show management
within 24 hours of the alleged violation.

17. Condition of entry. Every horse entered for competition will be under the control of the
Horse Show management, but the Horse Show management will, in no case, be responsible for
any loss or damage that may occur, and it shall be a condition of entry that each exhibitor shall
hold the Horse Show, its Directors, and Employees, CDS, CQA, or American Sporthorse or its
staff harmless for any loss or accident to his or her horse, horses, or equipment which may
occur.

18. Prize Money. All prize money will be awarded to the rider or owner only if their social
security number is recorded. In the case where there are fewer than 3 entries in a class, the
prize money will still be awarded according to the stated percentages in the class description.
Prize money for each class will be stated in the program.

Directions to American Sporthorse

Located in the middle of the Monterey Bay in Central California

For trailers:
From Hwy 101, cross to Hwy 1 to the Monterey Bay. We recommend taking Hwy 129 or G11
from 101 (instead of 17 or 152) for trailers to get to Hwy 1. Go north on Hwy 1 and take the
Buena Vista Exit and turn left. The farm is 0.8 mile on the left.

For Autos:
From the North: Take Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz and onto Hwy 1 south.
From East or South: take 152 or 129 to Watsonville to Hwy 1 north.

From Highway 1, take the Buena Vista Drive exit in Watsonville, turn toward the ocean (left if
heading north, right if heading south), American Sporthorse is 0.8 mile on the left.

Travel times:
Approximately 5-6 hours to LA area
Approximately 3 hours to Fresno area
Approximately 1.5 hours to San Francisco area
