THE QUADRILLER

President’s Letter

QUADRILLE 2000

It looks as though CQA is entering the new century refreshed and revitalized. The number of people who came forth at the January meeting and who were willing to be involved with the running of the organization was a clear and encouraging sign that quadrille riding does, indeed, still hold that fascination which attracted us in the first place. Thank you, Terry and Nina, for all the work you’ve done in the past few years to carry the organization forward. And, thank you, all of you, who volunteered to take on so many tasks, and especially JANICE MULHERN, who is our new Executive Director.

Janice will be our "CENTRAL OFFICE," our official contact person in all our publicity, and she will provide a sort of clearing house for requests, reports and questions. With so many individuals assuming responsibility for various tasks within the organization, it seemed clear that we also might end up with a significant level of confusion with so many contacts and phone numbers. So, instead, Janice’s will be the only number you need to remember. If there is something that you need that she is not personally handling, she can forward you call or request on to the appropriate person.

SHOW NEWS: We have been busy behind the scenes since January and this is one of the reason that the Quadriller hasn’t been published a bit sooner. The 2000 Championship Show is well in the works. Mark you calendar for OCTOBER 14th and 15th. THIS YEAR THERE IS NO REQUIRE,MENT FOR A QUALIFYING SCORE! We will be holding the show at the MID-STATE FAIRGROUNDS in Paso Robles. They have just completed putting the roof on their equestrian arena and Geof Gurley is working with the fairgrounds to develop footing that will be suitable to us dressage types. I visited the site in February and was impressed with the convenience of motels to the facility—literally within a five minute walk to the stables.

The fairgrounds are extremely easy to access from the highway and from where I live in Gilroy, as easy, straight, flat two hour drive (more with trailer, of course). I do hope that this location will draw more quadrilles from the southern half of the state. I do not feel that it is too far south for those of us up in the north to find it a difficult distance to travel.

Because will be collaborating with the San Luis Obispo chapter of CDS, we are able to have the two days and also to hire two judges. We have lined up PETER LERT and CREEKY ROUTSON, both qualified quadrille judges. Additionally, we’ll be able to offer dressage and dressage freestyle classes, as well as the quadrille championship classes. The SLO chapter is looking into getting some of the wonderful local wineries to host a tasting as well.

Altogether, it looks like we’re in for a really good time. And, please remember, your team does count; we can’t have a show without your entries.

CQA Annual Meeting

Mary Ramusssen

The California Quadrille 2000 annual meeting was held on Saturday, January 22, 2000 at Osierlea, San Juan Bautista, CA. The meeting was well attended with high enthusiasm throughout. There were several juniors present.

Terry Wilson, president, opened the meeting. Among the topics discussed were the following:

USDF rules for year-end awards. The award categories are Novice, Preliminary and Intermediate in ASHA shows. Teams must register with USDF (either group or individuals) immediately to compete in 2000.

There will be no qualification for CQA Championships.

Sites for the Quadrille Championship show in October, 2000. Paso Robles and Watsonville Fairgrounds were considered.

USDF Convention, Denver, CO: Liz Searle reported the meeting was small but the attendees were very enthusiastic. They discussed producing a quadrille video to use as a promotional and educational, as well as a training, tool. A quadrille registration form, "What is Quadrille" and dressage test booklet with quadrille tests are available at USDF. The revised Judges Glossary has quadrille terms.

Coastal Classic will not be held in 2000.

CQA library. Terry Wilson has a nice video library of quadrille rides available for general use free of charge.

Anne Howard is working on CQA website to help promote quadrille and CQA.

Coach of the year and Trooper of the Year awards.

JR awards. The highest average of 3 tests-all tests count.

USDF AWARDS INFORMATION

For the first time in the year 2000, USDF will be presenting quadrille awards. These will be awarded in a fashion similar to the All Breeds Awards:
A team must be registered with USDF and must earn 6 scores from 3 judges in at least 3 USDF recognized shows. The qualifying median score must be 58%.

The median scores will be ranked 1st to 10th place in each level nationally, with the highest ten, (just as in USDF Horse of the Year Awards) receiving awards.

The team may consist of four horses and riders, with two alternate horses and riders, for the competition year.

The rides may be either compulsory or freestyle, but at least one score must be from a compulsory ride.

The annual team registration is $40.00. Each team member must be a member of USDF (CQA membership gives you that membership, as CQA is a GMO of USDF).

In addition, USDF will be awarding Quadrille certificates to teams registering two scores of 58% or better.
