CALIFORNIA QUADRILLE ASSOCIATION
EXHIBITOR GUIDELINES
A number of established dressage shows
are adding Quadrille classes to their Prize Lists. There are some points
of etiquette that must be addressed so that Quadrillers will remain welcome
.
2. FEES - Show secretaries would prefer one check but a separate check from each of your members is also acceptable, provided the math is correct. Shows WILL collect the drug and other fees, BUT may not be aware that quadrille is exempt from the AHSA $15 non-member fee for those riders who are not participating in regular dressage classes. CDS shows, particularly the Chapter sponsored ones, may insist on collecting the CDS non-member fee. It is best not to argue; the Chapters are integral parts of CDS, relying on that organization for insurance, recognition, etc. Since a majority of our members are also members of CDS, this should not be a huge problem.
3. CHECK-IN - Upon arrival, let the Show Secretary know that your team is on the grounds. Ask if there are special warm-up rules. For example, even if the warm-up is available for you during the lunch break, you may have to share with the tractor. If it appears that warm-up will be crowded, you may have to be creative. (see 5.)
4. THE PERFORMANCE ARENA - Offer to help with the 60M - 40M changeover and swallow hysteria if the "new" arena end is less than solid (e.g. poles on the ground). Fix in your mind the location of the letters in the 40M arena since the makeshift arrangements might not be 100% visible.
5. WARM-UP - Most show grounds are
NOT set up for multiple teams warming up at the same time. Even one team
may panic dressage riders who are not familiar with team riding. It could
not be unprecedented for "crowded" warm up to be stated as the reason for
a "bad" score and this causes problems for show management. Therefore,
be prepared to warm up individually, adding pair and four work when you
are next to go. There may not be room to pre-ride the test as a group.
However, you can certainly find someplace to walk through the patterns
on your own two (eight) feet. When riding individually, please observe
the basic rules of etiquette:
a. If walking, always ride off the track to let the trotting and/or cantering horses have the rail.
b. Do not stop along the rail to talk to anyone: friend, coach or "what-have-you..."
c. Do not suddenly slam on the brakes while riding on the rail. If you have a discipline problem or whatever, ride into the center.
d. Do not suddenly cut in front of anyone.
e. If there is traffic in both directions, the riders going on the left hand have the rail--those moving to the right must pass on the inside. (Pass like cars--left hand to left hand.)
6. DO NOT PRACTICE WITH YOUR WHISTLE IN THE WARM UP. Imagine the chaos if it were heard in the competition arena during another ride!
7. Bring your own SOUND SYSTEM if the show does not have one. This is the single most difficult/irritating equipment problem for show managers and is the reason many will not offer musical classes of any type.
8. Teams that are planning to do EXHIBITIONS at events that are not regular dressage shows will soon discover that they usually have to provide the arena, the music, sometimes the sound equipment and, most certainly, the expertise and warm bodies to set up the arena. Event organizers also will want a written description of the group and always appreciate having someone from the group in the announcer's booth to help introduce the group.
The bottom line is that we need to
bend over backwards to make ourselves a positive addition to show schedules.
Courtesy to show management and other competitors - their interpretation
and you'll have to be mind readers - is paramount here. WE WANT TO BE WELCOMED
BACK!!!
